With the recent spike in temperatures, we have seen an increase in number of calls regarding cooling mats for pets. These cool mats are becoming a popular choice amongst pet owners to keep pets cool, but they can sometimes be chewed/ingested by curious cats and dogs.
Cooling mats have a gel layer inside and contain a polymer designed to radiate heat back into the air or floor surface to keep a pet cool. The gel absorbs the pet’s body heat and converts it to room temperature which is normally well below the pet’s body temperature. The cover is typically nylon.
The pads do not generally contain toxic components though if large pieces of the nylon cover are ingested, these could cause a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, pets should always be supervised when using these products.
