Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum spp) contain calcium oxalate crystals that can cause a stinging sensation when the plant is chewed. Common signs that are noted include drooling, vomiting (in animals that can vomit) diarrhoea, oral ulceration and inappetence.
Peace lilies should not be confused with other lily species that can case renal effects.
Biscuit’s owner recently called a member of the team after he ingested part of a leaf of a peace lily. After the ingestion, Biscuit was lethargic and developed some drooling. Biscuit’s owner was advised to monitor at home and ensure that Biscuit was eating and drinking (which he continued to do well!). We are pleased to report that he made a full recovery!
His owner sent us this lovely picture of Biscuit – isn’t he handsome!
