Shumba is a gorgeous 9-month-old Labrador who recently got hold of his owner’s electronic cigarette. His owner called Animal PoisonLine for advice and after calculating the amount of nicotine potentially ingested, it was advised that Shumba be observed at home.
Nicotine can cause signs very rapidly and these may include lethargy, drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea and changes in heart rate. Behavioural and neurological changes may also be seen such as agitation, hyperactivity and tremors.
It is important to note that severe cases of nicotine toxicity are uncommon in animals however this will depend entirely on the type of product, the route of exposure and the amount the animal is exposed to.
Shumba did not develop any adverse reaction after his encounter with the electronic cigarette and was able to remain at home. His owner sent us this lovely photo of him looking rather pleased with himself!
